History
The Quemquemtreu Valley was the main setting for de history Patagonia. Here stood the camp of the once powerful Mapuche cacique Saihueque, who governed an extensive territory ranging from northwest Chubut to northern Neuquén, known as Land of Apples.
These were the lands where native chiefs met and decided to allow Argentine scientist Francisco Pascasio Moreno (1852-1919), to become the first white man to reach Lake Nahuel Huapi from the east. In 1902, the area passed into the hands of the largest landholder in Paatagonia, Jose Menendez, and Quemquemtreu became the heart of Estancia Gente Grande, which eventually comprised over half a million hectares. One hundred years later, the splendor of the old days is still preserved at this cattle ranch, where visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings and take part in farm work at one of the pioneering Patagonian ranches, where polo ponies have been bred for many years
